First, identify the location fields
GPS latitude and longitude are the main coordinates to remove. Depending on the file, you may also see altitude, direction, a GPS timestamp, or a human-readable place added by another app. Review the complete group instead of clearing only one line.
Leave the capture date alone
The date a photo was taken helps Photos sort a library and build memories. It is separate from GPS coordinates, so there is no technical reason to discard it just to hide location. The same is true of camera model, exposure, image dimensions, captions, and copyright information.
- Open the photo and review its metadata.
- Clear the GPS and location fields you do not want to share.
- Keep the original capture date and any other useful fields selected.
- Export a copy instead of overwriting your only original.
- Inspect the exported copy before sending it.
Remember cloud and library location data
Removing coordinates from an exported file does not necessarily erase location information from your personal Photos library or cloud account. Those systems may maintain their own catalog data. The exported copy is the item you should verify.
For a broader pre-sharing review, use the photo metadata privacy checklist.
