EXIF, in plain English
EXIF is a type of metadata: information about a photo rather than the pixels you see. Your phone or camera may save it automatically when a picture is taken. Photo apps use it to sort memories, group images by place, and display camera details.
What EXIF data can include
- The date and time a photo was taken
- Camera or phone model
- Lens, exposure, ISO, and shutter information
- Image size and orientation
- GPS coordinates when location services were enabled
Why it matters
Metadata is useful when you need to organize a library or correct an old scan. It is worth reviewing before sending an original photo, because the data can travel with the file even when it is invisible in the picture.
